By the way, you may be thinking I was being flippant, but I wasn’t.
EPA, the last and most freely and maliciously punitive of the Alphabet agencies was created in December of 1970. Nixon won in a landslide in 1972 only to get the bum’s rush from the Administrative State in 1974. The draft ended in 1975 with the Vietnam war ending a couple years earlier. All the folks in charge in Congress currently started their careers in the early 70’s.
And I turned 10 in 1971.
A lot of people (and I think this is where wtfhappenedin1971.com guys are coming from) think it was the abandonment of the gold standard that screwed us.
I find that an attractive explanation, but I can’t say I’ve really made a study of it. I can say I’ve read a ton of stuff on “Modern Monetary Theory” and it seems like absolute foolishness to me. Madness, actually.
And Griggs v. Duke Power happened in 1971.
