What Will The “Springback” Be Like?

Assuming covid can’t go on forever, what will the springback look like?

Part of me thinks we will see an almost bacchanalian orgy. Another part of me thinks it will never end, and (for example) public masking will become a permanent feature.

I was talking with John the other day, and shared my grimmest thought: I worry that would-be demagogues have taken note of how easily the culture was sent into a state of panic, and how once in that state, there were no limits on what the public would accept regarding measures to protect them from the monster.

This goes to the Weinstein “genetic programming” model. It may be that there are no limits to the horrors that are coming.

I think you may well  be right on both counts. Power, once gained through a good crisis, is not voluntarily given back.

AND the human animal and spirit will respond in ways that it always has, like plant sprouts cracking concrete.

We will have two tiers of compliance, with one being underground, as is often the case in history. Hell, the elites have been caught living the elite life, per usual, during lockdown. No reason not to expect others to rebound in speak easy, key party fashion.

Do you like trashy thriller novels, J? If so, I might have one that’s right up your alley.

“Do you like trashy thriller novels”

You had me at “trashy”.

I think that, like most things, including the great flu pandemic of 1918, and then the polio epidemic of the 50’s, and the AIDS …whatever that was in the 80’s … , Covid will gradually fade away. When’s the last time an AIDS death made the news? Trump was right about this, he just underestimated the amount of time it would take. As did I.

In a way it doesn’t matter. The public that refuses continue living only half-free will ignore the restrictions to the extent they can. They’re past caring. Of course, the police can force closures of restaurants and keep cinemas padlocked.

So I anticipate more and more underground recreation, like during prohibition.

I have made mention of some of my Walter Mitty-ish hobbies and enthusiasms over on SH. During the first lockdown, someone you may or may not be acquainted with may or may not have been involved in organizing and hosting an underground weekend training seminar for law enforcement in another someone’s back yard. Air travel and validated force-on-force grappling may or may not have been involved, in ludicrous violation of an unnamed Governor’s orders. Or, maybe I’m confusing real life with trashy novels again; I’ve slept since the summer.

@thefauxmaster: beware; the trashman cometh…

I’d tend to agree with Sidhe. I think this kind of overreach based on terror, once established, is pretty damn hard to turn off. And for the politicians that have that hubris, there’s no going back.

But then again, assasination is the time honored solution to politicians out of control. There’s always that.
